Hello: My name is Jamie Sims Coakley and I am writer, photographer, & musician. I wrote my first poem at eleven and have since gone on to write countless prose, a screenplay, created and wrote a teleplay based on a legendary journalist in the 1950's and I am currently compiling a manuscript of my selected prose. Writing is my first love.
From 2000-2008 I helped write, record and sang lead and back up vocals on four full length rock and roll albums with my band WAXAPPLES. Along with being featured guests and in rotation at LA's famed Indie 103.1fm, WAXAPPLES were also blessed to share the stage with music legends X, The Violent Femmes, The B52's and Social Distortion.
My primary philosophy in life is this: be committed to not making decisions based on fear, love fully each day, and stay positive...miracles happen all the time!
IntersectingLA is my latest inspiration, born out of a love for Los Angeles, and the wonder for how, a big city is a million different cities depending on which intersection you happen to find yourself at.
Using photography (a Canon 20D), video (2 Flip Mino's mounted on an L bracket and attached to a microphone stand in order to shoot a cross section, i.e. North and West), a handheld audio recorder (H2), and my iphone for Tumblr updates, I basically camped out on a different intersection in Los Angeles (10 in all), shot what I saw, and am now based out of a studio in Downtown LA where I am painting, editing video and writing the songs that will make up the multi-media production of Intersecting(LA).
A bit more about the project; the video is edited and projected on a wall in a corner to give you the feeling of standing on that corner. The best photo from each intersection is printed on 50x33 canvas and accented with oil pigment sticks, and the audio is sample and cut into a original song, written, recorded and performed by me and my husband/collaborator Brian Coakley. With all final pieces in place, the project will be exhibited in a gallery type space with the songs for each intersection performed live on opening night.
Email intersectingla@gmail.com to be added to the email list so that you can receive an invitation to opening night!
